I had modified the default namespace to make it a subnamespace, changing it back fixed this issue for me. For some reason just closing and reopening VS fixed the problem for me. But this has helped in my case. Then edit the "Inherits" section in the XML directive (<%@ Application Codebehind="Global.asax.cs" Inherits="GodsCreationTaxidermy.MvcApplication" Language="C#" %>) so that it matches the actual full name of your Application class. Verified tat absolutely NO changes were made to the Web.config files, or any other files in the solution for that matter. In such case the control declarations are a little different.
